Emphasis will be given on PANI-carbon composite, PANI-acid-doped and other nanocomposites of PANI with carbon materials and metal compounds. The review also includes the effects of concentration and processing techniques on the properties and performance of the PANI composite supercapacitor electrodes.
The combination of PANI and carbon material to form a composite will result in a supercapacitor with both an electric double-layer mechanism and a redox reaction mechanism for storing electric charge. Research had shown that, compared to pure PANI, PANI/carbonaceous material composite shows improved electrochemical property .
In many cases, the target system is not a PANI-dominated supercapacitor, and PANI has been employed to improve the performance of supercapacitors using other electroactive materials. However, all these reports can assist us to have a better understanding of the role of PANI in enhancing the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors.
Sivakkumar et al. reported a high specific capacitance of 554 F g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 for pure PANI nanofiber electrochemically examined in a two-electrode cell using 1.0 M sulphuric acid, which is about 10 times greater than the capacitance obtained in conventional macroscopic PANI electrode.
